Donald Jewell has been named the new head football coach at Wyoming East.
The Wyoming County Board of Education approved Jewellat Monday’s meeting at Pineville Elementary School.
“I’m tickled to death,” Jewell said. “I’m glad they think enough of me to let me do something I love to do.”
Jewell was the last head coach at Herndon School from 1986-91. The 1991 team had a 7-3 record.
Prior to that, he had served as an athletic trainer under Walter Nixon at HHS.
He was an athletic trainer at Mullens through 1997 and spent on year as an athletic trainer at East before moving to North Carolina.
Jewell was a middle school coach in North Carolina and returned to the area four years ago due to the illness of a family member.
He has been a volunteer assistant under Gary Poindexter, who resigned the post last November, for the last four years.
East has made the playoffs each of the last three seasons, but the Warriors won’t have a lot of returning seniors.
“We’re in a rebuilding year,” Jewell commented. “We lost 12 seniors. We only have four starters coming back on offense and three on defense.
“But what we have,” he added, “are linemen. We lost Stevie Cook, but we still have five or six kids who have played (on the line).
“Our senior leadership helped us last year,” he said. “We’re going to call on some juniors and sophomores to be leaders this year.
Jewell says he hopes to get people who aren’t currently on the team to join the squad. “We have some good athletes walking the halls, and we’re going to try get them to come out and play for us,” he observed.
“We’ve got some good quality talent coming up,” Jewell stated. “They’re a couple of years away.”
Jewell says the players should be focused on the fundamentals.
“Football is like life,” he remarked. “You get out of it what you put into it.”
Jewell is the third head coach in WEHS history. Kevin Grogg coached from 1998-2008, and Poindexter followed from 2009 to 2014.
Applicants for the position, in addition to Jewell, were Jeff Simmons, Luke Stevens and Ronnie McCuin.
