GILBERT — Two weeks ago, 13-year-old Teyona Cowan received an award for being All-County in middle school basketball. She is the captain of Gilbert Middle School girls basketball team and scored more than 140 points this season.
On top of all of this, Cowan also played football for the Gilbert Middle School Lions football team. She was a starter on the team, playing defensive back, tailback and linebacker.
Cowan considers herself to be a tom-boy and enjoys being able to run with the guys. One of her favorite parts of playing football was getting tackles and overpowering the boys.
In the seventh grade she started playing football in the A-team league and had the most tackles and touchdowns on her team.
In her eighth grade year she moved up to the middle school team.
On top of her athletic accomplishments Cowan was also crowned homecoming queen. She had to rush during halftime to switch from her football gear to a homecoming dress.
“Teyona is the first football players we have ever had to also be homecoming queen,” said principal Daniel Dean.
Cowan’s football career might be over after middle school, but she is considering trying out for the high school team.
