INEZ, Ky. – It was a game of firsts for Belfry freshman Keaton Taylor. He helped the Pirates improve to 16-6 on the season as they edged by Sheldon Clark on the road Wednesday night.
Belfry took a 1-0 lead in the top of the1st inning with one out, Zack Francisco singled, then stole second base. He reached third on error by the catcher and then stole home to score the Pirate’s first run.
Sheldon Clark took the lead with two outs in the 2nd inning. Taylor Perry walked and Brian McCoy singled for the Cardinals. Perry then scored on a passed ball and McCoy scored on a balk.
In the Belfry 6th inning, with one out, Howie Dotson was safe on error by the third baseman and stole second. Francisco then singled, scoring Dotson to tie the game.
With two outs, Keaton Taylor, who came in as a relief pitcher, helped his own cause with a single. That brought in Francisco and Tyler Williams, who had been intentionally walked.
That was the first career hit and RBI’s for Belfry’s Taylor, who is only a 9th grader.
In the Sheldon Clark 7th inning, Perry led off with a single and McCoy was hit by a pitch, and senior Jared Masters came into the game as a relief pitcher.
Perry later scored on a wild pitch, however Masters struck out the last two batters.
Taylor got his first mound win for the Pirates and head coach Michael Hagy. Tanner Lafferty took the loss for the Cardinals, now 7-13 on the season. Masters picked up his second save of the season for Belfry.
