VIENNA — Ohio Valley University’s Fighting Scots continue to make additions to their athletic programs. OVU Athletic Director Larry Lyons announced this week that the Fighting Scots will add junior varsity teams to four of its men’s programs beginning in the fall of 2010.

OVU men’s baseball, basketball, golf and soccer teams will welcome the addition of JV teams during the 2010-2011 academic year.

Lyons indicated that recruiting has begun for each new team and the department is in the process of adding assistant coaches in the coming weeks.

“It is a big plus for our current coaches as they work to develop their programs,” Lyons said. “Take golf, for example, there were several recruits that we worked with in the past few years who were interested in attending OVU and playing on our men’s golf team. However, when they looked at the caliber of golfers we currently have, they realized that they would have little opportunity to compete at tournaments. Had we had a JV team in place, we could have easily accommodated them. Adding JV teams to the mix is also a great opportunity to continue building the various programs.”

Lyons noted that several other regional conference programs – such as West Virginia Wesleyan and Wheeling Jesuit Universities – have JV programs for baseball and basketball and are looking forward to the added competition in the coming year.

“The addition of our four JV teams, coupled with the addition of lacrosse and wrestling as varsity sports, will expand our student-athlete base by 50-55 students in the next year,” Lyons. “This is a milestone event for OVU athletics and something we are thrilled to be celebrating in our 50th year as a university in the Mid-Ohio Valley.”
